Joneigh S. Khaldun, M.D., M.PH., F.A.C.E.P., F.A.A.E.M. is the Director and Health Officer for the Detroit Health Department and a practicing emergency physician at Henry Ford Hospital. Under Dr. Khaldun’s leadership, Detroit launched a robust, community-driven health assessment and improvement planning process engaging over 1200 residents; brought together over 20 medical providers in a new teen pregnancy prevention healthcare network and education campaign; and successfully led Detroit through the largest hepatitis A outbreak in modern U.S. history, vaccinating over 9,000 people. She is the driving force behind a proactive neighborhood-based strategy to address child lead poisoning and created a new program to provide outreach and services to people living in occupied foreclosed homes. Dr. Khaldun was recently selected for the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health Award by the National Minority Quality Forum.

Previously, Dr. Khaldun was the Baltimore City Health Department’s Chief Medical Officer. She has held several local and national leadership positions, including Director of the Center for Injury Prevention and Control at George Washington University, Founder and Director of the Fellowship in Health Policy in the University of Maryland Department of Emergency Medicine, and Fellow in the Obama administration’s Office of Health Reform. She’s participated in several national and local boards and committees, including the Commission on Health in Montgomery County, Maryland, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit, the Detroit Urban Research Collaborative, the governor-appointed Michigan Public Health Advisory Council, and the CDC Health Disparities Advisory Committee. Dr. Khaldun obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, MPH in Health Policy from George Washington University, and residency in emergency medicine at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY.
